Remarks by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif during the visit to Turkish Parliament, Ankara, 23 February 2017

It is an extremely moving experience to stand here in the Turkish Parliament, which was targeted during the heinous coup attempt on 15 July.

The Turkish Grand National Assembly is the sacred symbol of Turkey’s democracy and the aspirations of its people.

We vividly remember that the valiant members of TGNA, led by Speaker Ismail Kahraman, immediately assembled in the Parliament and convened continuous sessions – in daring defiance of the illegal coup attempt and in fearless defence of democracy.

Their courage and perseverance in the face of incessant and indiscriminate bombing were simply remarkable.

This is indeed a Ghazi Majlis, and its Speaker a real hero!

On the dark night of 15 July, we witnessed shining examples of human resolve, bravery and sacrifice all across Turkey.

We pray for the 248 martyrs, and wish speedy recovery for the 2,200 injured.

We salute the collective resolve of the Turkish nation in successfully overcoming one of the greatest challenges of its recent history.

The leadership, Government and people of Pakistan stood solidly by their Turkish brothers and sisters on the night of 15 July, and they will always be shoulder-to-shoulder at all times.

Both Houses of our Parliament passed unanimous resolutions expressing abiding solidarity with Turkey, its leadership and democratic institutions.

Democracy is among the key values binding our nations together.

Our brotherhood has existed for centuries, and would live forever.

Our fraternal and multi-dimensional cooperation would continue to flourish – for the benefit of our two peoples and for regional and international peace and development.

I thank you.
